After climbing up through the woods and over Beacon Hill once an Iron Age fort and later a telegraph station during the Napoleonic Wars you can enjoy views of the Isle of Wight before linking up briefly with the South Downs Way. Some downhill paths a bit slippery in the wetter times of year, so wear good grippy boots.
A lovely walk. Use the top path; the lower path, which is tempting at low tide, hides some very soft clay and should be avoided. The terrain is relatively easy, although there are some hilly sections and some of the woodland paths can be very muddy. Turn left at the signposted footpath junction and follow the route downhill, through the staggered barriers and into Great Wood. On the far side turn right and walk for a short distance to a green public bridleway sign. Keep right along this path which will lead you back to the car park where the walk began. The decent is on a wider pathway, where you will find a cute garden to have an afternoon tea, or walk back to the village where you can reward yourself with a cool pint of beer and a nice meal in the local pub. Its more the distance that was tiring. Follow the obvious path ahead, enjoying the spectacular views across the valley to the left.

Starting from Battle Railway Station, turn left to follow Station Approach to its junction with the main A2100. We cut the corner off where it meant going on the road but thoroughly enjoyed it, makes a great evening walk. Moderate 4.7 (174) South Downs National Park. Good hills. Up on the Firle Beacon trail, there is fork you need to take, but is not signposted. The house sits in 330 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland on a south facinggreensandslope overlooking the valley of the River Beult. It was placed on a hill so that the gamekeeper could signal any danger to the keeper of the deer park at nearby Ringmer (which also belonged to Lord Gage). Very muddy trails! Again exercising great care, cross the A24. This was built in 1819 by the third Viscount Gage (of the nearby Firle Place) as a gamekeepers cottage. This park is located near Ramsgate and has splendid views over Pegwell Bay and Sandwich Bay.
